Corrosion in general

Corrosion is seen as one of the biggest problems for the assets in the Oil and Gas industry. Most of the leaking and malfunctions in machines are caused by corrosion. Certain machines and lines have under bad Hydro Carbons conditions a lifetime of only 2 years, sometimes even less and.this is causes exorbitant costs.
There are a lot of different forms of corrosion we can see in oil or gas pipe lines. What we describe here is for sure not covering all these types of corrosion, but we will concentrate on the most common we have encountered so far. Merus can prevent only corrosion inside the pipe lines, corrosion on the outer surfaces of the pipes, we are not able to treat.
Today companies are using high grade steels in order to lower or avoid the corrosion. But in a lot of cases this high invstment is not done from the beginning or the composure of the crude changes over time. So corrosion is an ongoing battle for the operators in the Oil and Gas.

From theoretical point of view Merus should be able to lower or even stop all these kind of corrosion. We do not have practical proof for all cases, because we haven't had the chance to make a trail in the field, or it is not possible to make a proper monitoring of the problem, and therefore we dont have a report. What we have seen in a lot of case in different applications worldwide, Merus is able to lower the corrosion rate dramatic. There are cases where the corrosion rate is less then 10% of the former value.

Corrosion due to water

A lot of crude has a rather high water cut, this water often causes corrosion. Water is used to pressurize the wells, and in areas near the sea, seawater or brackish water is used. In the water there is found traces of H2S or other corrosive ingredients.
Merus is either able to lower significant or stop entirely this easier forms of corrosion. In the water treatment we have hundreds of cases, where the corrosion is stopped total. In the hydro carbons there are only a few, where we have reliable data.

H2S Corrosion

As described above, from theoretical point of view Merus should be able to reduce or stop also the H2S Corrosion, but we have no data from the field.

CO2 Corrosion

As described above, from theoretical point of view Merus should be able to reduce or stop also the CO2 Corrosion, but we have no data from the field.

SRB Corrosion

SRB are sulfate reduction bacteria, these are anaerobic bacteria and can therefore survive as well in crude oil. These SRB are causing more an more problems in pipelines and machines. It is still discussed why all of a sudden so many of these bacteria are found, but there are no satisfying answers right now. SRB are "eating" the sulfate out of the steel, the structure of the steel weakens, pitting might start. Additionally SRB producing in the process H2S, which again is responsible for more corrosion.
Once pitting started, the SRB settle in this pitting. If then the pipe line is pigged, the SRB are in most cases undisturbed, because the pig is just passing by, without causing any problem to the SRB.
The ability of Merus to bring its oscillations in all parts of a system, is helping a lot. So as we know from a lot of water systems, Merus is getting rid if MICs in deadlegs, and a hole from pitting is a very small dead leg.

Merus is used in some applications, where SRB are present, and where the SRB are made responsible for the corrosion of the pipe lines, or the machines.
In both cases Merus was able to lower the amount of SRB to some degree, but the corrosion itself, is reduced far more. There are case studies showing the seen results.
It is very difficult to monitor the SRB and the corrosion, e.g in a 20 km pipeline of 24 inch, therefore the data we get are coming only very slow and the interpretation of these is even more difficult.

As we know there are a lot of pipe lines and systems which have massive problems with corrosion. Merus is easily prepared to do field trail, almost everywhere in the world.
